Titled Zicharon, the Hebrew word for memory and often associated with mourning rituals, this work aims to convey Judaism's culture of loss and remembrance, of destruction and of hope. The focal point is a towering wax candle, depicting what is know as a yahrzeit candle, or a candle traditionally lit on the anniversary ones passing. However, there is a duality to the chosen symbolism, for candles play a multifaceted role in Jewish observance. And, while they are certainly its primary symbol of mourning, they are also its primary symbol of a more positive kind of illumination.
